A Simple Guide to Caring for Everyday Jewelry
Share
Everyday jewelry encounters skin oils, cosmetics, moisture, friction, and household products. A few consistent habits can reduce unnecessary wear while keeping care simple.
Put jewelry on last
Apply fragrance, lotion, hair products, and cosmetics before putting on jewelry. Allow products to dry first so less residue reaches the surface of the piece.
Know when to remove it
Unless a product is specifically described for those conditions, remove jewelry before swimming, bathing, exercising, sleeping, or cleaning. Chlorine, salt water, chemicals, perspiration, and repeated friction can affect materials differently.
Wipe after wear
Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to gently remove oils and surface residue. Avoid abrasive cloths and do not apply a cleaning solution unless it is appropriate for every material in the piece.
Store pieces separately
Chains, polished surfaces, and gemstones can scratch one another. Fasten necklaces and store pieces in separate soft compartments or pouches in a dry location.
Follow product-specific guidance
Solid gold, plated metals, sterling silver, pearls, and different gemstones do not all require the same treatment. When in doubt, begin with the least aggressive method and ask the seller for instructions specific to the piece.
Thoughtful care should protect your jewelry without making it difficult to enjoy. Keep the routine gentle, consistent, and appropriate to the listed materials.
